Overview
The Modified Pico is among the smallest Arduino™ Duemilanove compatible microcontrollers with an on-board USB connection. It is based on the Atmel ATmega328 with 14 digital input/output pins (6 of which can be used as PWM outputs), 8 analog inputs, and a 16 MHz resonator. The input/output pins are all conveniently grouped with the digital pins on one side of the board and the analog pins on the other.
The Pico is intended for low-power connections (3-5 volts DC) and easier integration with breadboard prototyping. It will also work as a less expensive option for semi-permanent installations where a USB connection is desired. It is available as a semi-kit without pre-soldered pin headers, allowing for the use of various types of connectors or wires, or fully assembled with pin headers already soldered for an additional cost.
Minimally designed, the Pico provides most of the features of the Arduino™ Duemilanove in a smaller package than the Nano, including support for auto-reset when a new sketch is uploaded, reverse polarity protection, and a resettable fuse to prevent damage to the board or computer in case of a short. To keep costs low, we used all surface mount components and a thin, two layer design.
The Modified Pico can be programmed with the most recent Arduino™ software by selecting "Arduino Duemilanove w/ ATmega328" under the Tools > Board menu. For details, see the reference and tutorials.
Please note: to allow for low-power battery operation, the Pico does not have an on-board voltage regulator. Always use a properly regulated power supply or battery rated for between 3 and 5 volts DC when not connected to USB. Powering the Pico with more than 5 volts might kill it!
